To make cogeneration profitable also for objects which do not need enough heat in summer (e.g. schools) or make a long pause in the winter (e.g. outdoor swimming pools), we have invented the CHPmobile with our customer in the 1990’s. In this configuration, our cogeneration units are mounted on a trailer.
How a CHPmobile can be employed is shown e.g. by the Stadtwerke (public utilities) of Bad Homburg: In springtime, the CHPmobile is driven ca. 1 km to the Freibad (public outdoors swimming pool) Waldmohr (german article (336 kB)). The staff connects the CHPmobile inside a garage to the onsite pipe connections and the mains. Transportation and connection require ca. 1 hour, after that the CHPmobile is ready to operate. When the outdoors pool closes in autumn, the CHPmobile is driven to the school of Waldmohr (Rothenfeldschule) and continues operation there.
The high utilization achieved this way increases the profitability and the ecological gain of the CHP unit. The travelling does in no way impair the lifetime of a CHP unit: The very first mobile CHP unit had started operation in Hiddenhausen in 1995, has been awarded in 1996 by the former minister for environment Angela Merkel with the price of the German gas industry and operated for 20 years in its sites in Hiddenhausen and Herford.
